What is SMO 254 Material

Properties of SMO 254

SMO 254 is stainless steel that resists pitting and crevice corrosion. They can also withstand normal corrosion as well as stress corrosion and cracking. SMO 254 is superior to other typical stainless steels due to its high material strength. Furthermore, the material grade has a high welding capacity.

These pipes and tubes are available in dimensions up to 230mm (outside diameter). These are supplied on the annealed or white pickled state also with the bright annealing process. The other forms of supply are welded tubes and pipes, forged, cast products, and so on.

 The 254 SMO is commonly used in the following applications: 

SMO 254 is used in Equipment in pulp bleaching plants. Components in gas cleaning systems and Chemical industry process equipment. Equipment for handling seawater like heat exchangers, ballast water systems, firefighting systems.

For maritime scrubbers, 254 SMO and other super austenitic have been specified since their sporadic usage can result in operation temperatures above 250 degrees Celsius. 

However, because continuous operation results in lower temperatures, super duplex stainless steels have been effectively employed in flue gas desulphurization systems for power plants. In water treatment systems such as RO/desalination, super austenitic such as 254 SMO have been replaced by super duplex stainless steels.
